Cluster C — Anxious or Fearful

Avoidant Personality Disorder

"I want closeness, but rejection feels certain."

Overview

A pervasive pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, and hypersensitivity to negative evaluation — unlike Schizoid PD, the desire for connection is genuinely present; it's the near-certainty of rejection that keeps the person out of the rooms where connection could happen.

Core features

  • ✦Avoids occupational activities involving significant interpersonal contact, fearing criticism
  • ✦Unwilling to get involved unless certain of being liked
  • ✦Restraint in intimate relationships for fear of being shamed or ridiculed
  • ✦Preoccupied with being criticized or rejected in social situations
  • ✦Views self as socially inept, unappealing, or inferior

How it can develop

Frequently develops from a temperamentally shy or behaviorally inhibited child paired with an environment of rejection, ridicule, or overly critical parenting — the felt certainty of rejection is often the residue of specific, repeated early experiences of it.

A common misconception

This is often mistaken for simple shyness or introversion, but the level of impairment is much greater — real relationships and opportunities are actively avoided, and the person suffers over the isolation rather than preferring it.

Growth orientation

CBT approaches targeting the core belief of inadequacy, paired with gradual, structured exposure to social risk, have solid evidence — this is a pattern where genuine relational desire gives therapy real traction.

This page is educational and destigmatizing in intent, not a diagnostic tool. Personality disorders are diagnosed by qualified clinicians through structured clinical assessment — not self-identification against a list of traits. If anything here resonates strongly, a conversation with a mental health professional is the right next step.
